Lingua Technologies today announced the availability of a new version of its simplified English software, SIMPLUS, for the worldwide market.
SIMPLUS, a simplified English grammar checker, is for writing English texts that are easier to understand for people whose first language is not English, for technical writing or for making translation cheaper and easier.
Simplified English (also called Controlled English) helps make documents clear by using a writing standard established within a given corporate entity. Simplified English relies on a limited choice of standard English words and restricted acceptable sentence structures, but without losing meaning. In other words, Simplified English involves using a subset of English words and a subset of English grammar.
SIMPLUS consists of a lexical controller and a grammar checker that apply a set of generic controlled language rules. SIMPLUS has a lexicon management tool which allows you to create your own "Not Approved" and "Approved Words" lexicons. Furthermore, SIMPLUS lets you manage lexicons (activating and deactivating them) and give them different priorities.
This version of SIMPLUS provides new ways of interacting with the outside world, through a FrameMaker plug-in and an XML plug-in.
Produced by Adobe, FrameMaker is a desktop publishing application that remains unrivalled among professional technical writer tools.
The XML plug-in offers compatibility with XML authoring systems. Furthermore, SIMPLUS uses XML as the data format for the external dictionaries. It is therefore easy to enrich the SIMPLUS lexicon with a simple custom program that converts your existing lexicon files.
Other features of the new version of SIMPLUS include the extension of the linguistic capacity of the lexicons, which allows for the easy addition of neologisms, and user interface improvements.
SIMPLUS adopts modular software licensing: Use only what you need, pay only for what you use. The principle is that you pay only for what you need.
The basic version of SIMPLUS is a stand-alone application. It provides an editing window which opens and saves text (ASCII) files. In essence, it is the SIMPLUS trial version.
You can add a Microsoft Word plug-in, an XML plug-in or an Adobe FrameMaker plug-in and have a SIMPLUS toolbar integrated in the environment, allowing you to save your revised texts with the proper formatting and style intact.
